Professional Pay Band: $27,616-$34,520
Description of Work: Performs professional and technical activities in the culture and distribution of fish. Activities include care and maintenance of brood fish, collection and care of eggs, and all phases of fish rearing and distribution. Employee spends first year of employment in a training assignment under close supervision of an administrative superior. As knowledge and experience are gained, less supervision is exercised and the opportunity to take independent action is broadened.
Example of Duties: Duties include egg handling, inventory and incubation; inventorying live fish, establishing rearing levels, feeding levels and monitoring and manipulation of environmental conditions for optimum growth and development. Monitors fish health, administers prescribed treatments and maintains inventory records. Distributes fish into state waters; monitors fish condition in transit, adjusts life support equipment to provide optimum environment during transit and properly acclimates fish to new environment prior to release. Provide assistance for other hatcheries. Identify and report maintenance, repair and safety issues regarding hatchery equipment and facility structures.
Qualifications: Must have working knowledge of hatchery operations, policies and regulations dealing with distribution of fish in state waters. Must have knowledge of fish pathologenic and environmental disease and their symptoms. Must understand and have a working knowledge of fish genetics and nutritional and environmental requirements of fish. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in fish and wildlife management or a closely related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered. Work experience is not required for new hires with a bachelor's degree who must successfully complete a one-year training assignment.
Professional Pay Band: $33,200-$41,500
Description of Work: A fisheries biologist's duties involve all aspects of fisheries management, research and habitat protection. Independent motivation, problem solving and decision-making are required. Must be capable of independent work with minimal direct supervision.
Example of Duties: Professional activities include field collections of biological, physical and chemical data, analysis of data, inspection of habitat alteration projects, interagency communication and dissemination of information to the public. Stays current with pertinent scientific literature. Prepares written reports following standard scientific guidelines to present findings & make recommendations to maintain or enhance fisheries resources & aquatic habitat. Hire, train and supervise technical assistants. Assist in development of work plans, budgets, fishing regulations & stocking programs. Review land management & streambed & bank alteration proposals and make recommendations to repair maintain or enhance aquatic habitats.
Qualifications: Must be familiar with fisheries population dynamics, habitats, & management. Skill required in operation of computers, electrofishing equipment and other standard fishery sampling and collection gear. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with private landowners, the public & fellow workers through report writing & planning, public forums & the news media. Must have good working knowledge of principles and methods of statistical analysis, computerized data analysis & technical report writing. Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather in & around water; to carry 75 lbs for 100 yds & to establish & continue productive working relationships with supervisors, peers, other agencies & the public. Applicants must have a master's degree in fisheries science or a closely related biological field & 1 year responsible experience as a fisheries biologist in research or management.
Technical Pay Band: $21,266-$26,583
Description of Work: Under general supervision of biologist or Fisheries Manager, performs technical duties to implement regional management objectives.
Example of Duties: Assists project biologist by performing all types of fisheries fieldwork using specialized and standardized sampling equipment & techniques. This may include snorkeling, scuba, creel surveys, redd surveys, fish passage, fish marking & trapping, habitat survey & restoration, radio telemetry, netting, electrofishing, hydroacoustics, water quality sampling, zooplankton & insect identification & collection. Other duties include computer data & file management & the partial analysis & written summation of fisheries date for project reports, equipment maintenance, repair & inventory. Many of these positions are seasonal or temporary.
Qualifications: Applicant must have a high school diploma & 5 years of progressively responsible experience as a fisheries field worker or any equivalent combination of education & experience. Must have skill in the operation of equipment related to fish survey work, knowledge of maintenance procedures, be able to follow instructions, work independently & meet deadlines. Must be able to communicate effectively with peers & the public. Must be able to identify fish species, invertebrate zooplankton & aquatic insects and must have the physical ability to work & camp outdoors in adverse working conditions.
