Paddlefish snagging is a spring ritual for many Montana anglers. Paddlefish, like many other native fish of Montana’s eastern rivers, evolved to spawn when mountain snowmelt and rainfall swell stream flows in prairie drainages. Each year the availability of paddlefish depends on the snow pack in the headwaters of the Missouri, Yellowstone and Powder River drainages. The timing and volume of runoff determines the timing and quantity of the paddlefish moving up the major rivers.
