Like the rerun of a favorite Western movie, Bannack Days, July 21-22 at Bannack State Park, offer an irresistible step back in time. "Once a year, this 1860 abandoned mining town comes to life," said Angela Hurley, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks park manager. Craftsmen and women line the streets dressed in period clothing to demonstrate long-forgotten skills such as spinning, black smithing, candle making and black powder shooting. Musicians play long forgotten tunes and a gunfight is scheduled at high noon. Activities go from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., beginning with breakfast in the Hotel Meade from 7-9:30 a.m.Food concessions, with everything from kettle korn and lemonade to buffalo burgers and Rocky Mountain oysters, add to the festive atmosphere. Most activities are included in the $4 per vehicle admission fee for the day. Bannack State Park is located 25 miles southwest of Dillon, just off Highway 278.
