Five yearling cattle were recently confirmed injured by wolves on a federal grazing allotment southwest of Drummond. USDA Wildlife Services confirmed the depredations on Aug. 22.

Two of the yearlings appear to have been attacked sometime in the last couple of weeks and three others were injured more recently.   None of the cattle were killed in the attacks.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) officials authorized the removal of one wolf.   The wolf can either be removed by Wildlife Services or with a 45-day shoot on site permit issued to the grazing allotment permittees.

FWP uses an incremental approach to address confirmed livestock depredations and will continue to work with area landowners and grazing allotment permittees to reduce depredation risks and monitor the area for wolves.

To learn more about Montana’s recovered wolf population, visit FWP online at    www.fwp.mt.gov/wildthings/wolf , where visitors can also tell FWP when they see wolves or wolf sign.   The information helps to verify the activity, distribution, and pack size of Montana’s recovered wolf population.
