Several different activities are planned to occur at Makoshika State Park this summer. The park is adjacent to Glendive, Montana and is composed of badlands topography with broken, dissected hills and swales. It is a unique and visually exciting park that provides lots of potential family fun, ranging from hiking, bird watching, educational presentations to fun activities for children..
For children ages 7 – 13 several youth programs are scheduled at the park visitor center this summer. To register, forms are available at the park visitor center and for additional information just call 406-377-6256.
Thursday June 19, 2008 – Diane Gabriel Trail
We will be hiking the Diane Gabriel Trail. Participants will learn about the geology of the park and will receive a surprise at the end of the trail tour.

Thursday June 26, 2008 – Slithery Snakes and Creepy Crawlies
We will be incorporating knowledge of local reptiles, insects, and other creepy crawlies that inhabit our area into a fun and exciting game of Wheel of Fortune.

Thursday July 3, 2008 – Birds
Participants will get a first hand look at local birds and the famous park bird, the buzzard. They will be making a fun and easy birdfeeder to hang at home.

Thursday July 10, 2008 - Folf!
We will be having a fun folf day on our newly redesigned folf course.

Thursday July 17, 2008 – Dino-mania We will be learning about the dinosaurs found in our area and we will be creating our very own paper maché dino eggs.

Thursday July 24, 2008 – Oh Deer! Participants will learn about the wild animals that are commonly found in our area. We will look at hides and tracks of those animals and play a habitat game.

Thursday July 31, 2008 Makoshika Jeopardy
Youth program participants will be quizzed on what they learned in previous programs with an exciting game of Makoshika Jeopardy.

Youth Campout August 6 & 7, 2008
A youth campout is planned for Wednesday & Thursday, August 6 & 7, 2008 at Makotahena Lodge (the A-frame at the Lions camp) beginning at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday evening. Parents are invited to join in the evening meal. The remainder of the evening and Thursday morning will be filled with fun and interesting activities led by volunteers and members of the Makoshika State Park staff. Parents need to pick up their children at the Lions Camp by 10:00 A.M., Thursday, August 7, 2008. To be eligible to attend this camp-out, children need to attend at least four of the above-listed weekly programs. We need four parents or guardians (a minimum of two must be female) to attend the camp-out to provide sufficient adult supervision of the children. Please consider making the camp-out one of this summer’s activities you choose to enjoy with your child. In the event that proper adult supervision cannot be enlisted, the campout will be cancelled.
