BILLINGS — A public meeting on a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks proposal to buy 72 acres for a fishing access site northwest of Columbus is set for 7 p.m. July 24, 2008, at the Columbus City Hall.

The Holmgren property borders about a mile of the north bank of the Yellowstone River approximately five miles upstream from Columbus. The property lies between the river and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks. It is accessed from State Highway 10.

It would provide public access to the river at a strategic location and secure future opportunities to develop public recreation at the site.

Initially the site is intended for walk-in use. Developments would include signs, fencing, a small parking lot and a new railroad crossing to provide automobile access to the land. Later development, which would require a new environmental assessment and additional public review, could include a boat launch, latrine and possibly a state park campground.

FWP would purchase title to the land for $550,000.

A draft environmental assessment on the purchase is published on the Internet at http://fwp.mt.gov/publicnotices/notice_1800.aspx . Written or emailed comments on the proposed purchase will be accepted by FWP until Aug. 8. Comments may be emailed to dhabermann@mt.gov or mailed to:
