Visit Salmon Lake State Park on Saturday, Aug 2 to learn about the history and future plans for the Milltown Dam site. The program starts at 8 p.m. at the state park, 10 miles south of Seeley Lake just off Highway 83. Program presenter, Diana Hammer from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), will share the history of the dam and her experiences working at the site during the dam removal project. Milltown Dam stood for one hundred years at the confluence of the Clark Fork and Blackfoot Rivers just west of Missoula before it was removed in March 2008. Contaminated sediments from upstream mining operations collected behind the dam, giving it an EPA Superfund site designation. Hammer will talk about current efforts to clean up these contaminated sediments and plans for restoring the now reconnected Clark Fork and Blackfoot river channels. The program is free. Admission to state parks is free for Montana residents, however park fees apply to non-residents. The state park will host programs on three other Saturday evenings in August including Aquatic Invasive Species in Aug. 9, Archaeology on Aug. 16, and Wolverines in Glacier on Aug. 23.
