BILLINGS — Two day-long programs are set for Chief Plenty Coups State Park in August.

On Aug. 9, Jerome Hugs Jr. will teach drum making. Hugs, a traditional artist and member of the Crow tribe, will introduce students to the materials and techniques for making a traditional hand drum. He also will demonstrate drum playing and singing traditional social hand drum songs. Participants will finish a hand drum to take home.

The workshop is limited to 12 participants. The cost is $30 plus about $60 for materials. Lunch is available for $6.

Pre-registration is required by calling the park at (406) 252-1289.

The workshop is part of the Roaring Thunder Cultural Workshops to teach participants about Crow and other Native American culture and traditional arts. Roaring Thunder was the name bestowed on George Snell, Montana district governor of Kiwanis clubs, by Chief Plenty Coups in a 1924 adoption ceremony.

On Aug. 23, Chief Plenty Coups State Park will offer a day-long nature camp for children ages 9 – 17.

The $20 registration fee includes all materials and lunch. Pre-registration is required by Aug. 18 by calling (406) 252-1289.

Activities will include wildlife tracking, plant identification, insect collecting and fishing. Each participant will take home souvenirs from the camp.

Chief Plenty Coups State Park is in Pryor, 25 miles south of Billings on Montana Highway 418.
