Are you interested in archaeology and the history of Bannack State Park? Do you like to work the soil and get your hands dirty? If so, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is looking for volunteers to help dig into archeological history at Bannack State Park Sept. 3-7, 2008.

Join noted historic archeologist Dan Hall of Missoula to assist with professional historic archeological excavation at the Meade Hotel. Previous work at the site has uncovered buttons, cufflinks, trade beads, medicine, wine and beer bottles, elaborate ceramics, a woman’s garter, a Winchester shell, and a variety of other items.

The excavation work is being conducted to mitigate for ground disturbance related to an upcoming building stabilization effort. The project is a result of a one-time expenditure from the Montana Legislature for stabilizing historic structures at Bannack.

Volunteers will be asked to help excavate and screen dirt. The work will take place daily between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Preference will be given to volunteers who are willing to give one or more days of time.

Those interested in volunteering should call Cathy Speich, Bannack Association President, at 406-683-4520 . Volunteers should bring a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, lunch and snacks, and sturdy shoes.
