What do ducks eat? Ducks eat different foods, depending on their species and age, including: seeds, roots, stems of wetland plants, grains like barley from a farmer’s field, even midges and mayfly nymphs.

Are ducks waterproof?

Yes. Ducks have a top layer of waterproof feathers. A special gland near the duck’s tail produces oil that gradually coats its outer layer of feathers. Underneath its waterproof coat are fluffy, soft feathers that keep the duck warm.

How do ducks know when to fly south?

Ducks’ instinct kicks in to urge them to fly south when the amount of daylight, the weather conditions and difficulty in finding food combine to say it is time to migrate.

How many species of migratory birds are there?

There are over 860 species of migratory birds in North America. Only 58 are designated as game species with established hunting seasons. The rest, over 800 species, have no sport hunting seasons and are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

How can you tell male from female ducks?

The males or drakes tend to be the more brightly colored, while the coloring on female ducks tends to be duller so that they blend into the background when they are sitting on their nests. This protective coloring helps keep the females and their ducklings safe.
