Montana State Parks Poster Contest Winners On Display In Miles City

The winning artwork from the 2008 Montana State Parks Poster Contest will be on display through November 7 at the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks regional office in Miles City.

  This year’s first place poster contest winner is Emily Perkins, of Ruder Elementary in Columbia Falls. She created a poster of Wayfarers State Park near Bigfork illustrating a bashful mother bear and two cubs frolicking in the park.

 

The theme of the 19 th annual poster contest was “Experience Montana State Parks.” Fifth grade students were asked to illustrate an experience they might have in a state park and describe it in words. Perkins received prizes valued at $200 which included her choice of two nights lodging for her family in a Montana State Park yurt, cabin, or tipi and a backpack filled with equipment and field guides. Also, as part of her first place win, Perkins’ class and another fifth grade class won a two-day field trip to Great Falls to visit Giant Springs State Park, First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park, the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, and the Charles M. Russell Museum. Second place was awarded to Sabrina Riff of Montana City School in Clancy for her poster of Salmon Lake State Park dominated by a beautifully drawn westslope cutthroat trout catching a fly. Devin Maves of Forsyth Elementary in Forsyth won third place for his poster of Makoshika State Park’s naturally etched features. Riff and Maves received prizes valued at $150 and $100 respectively, including backpacks. There were five honorable mentions awarded, a testimony to the number of quality pieces submitted to the contest. Those receiving honorable mention were: Bozeman’s Cody Wiers of Emily Dickinson School for his poster of Hell Creek State Park; Sierra Rauscher of Prairie View School in Conrad for a poster of Wild Horse Island State Park; Markaela Francis of Lewis and Clark Elementary in Great Falls for her poster of Ackley Lake State Park; Talli Carmalt of West Valley School in Kalispell for her poster of Wild Horse Island State Park; and Tasha Schalin of Our Lady of Lourdes School in Great Falls for her poster of Bannack State Park.

All winners will also receive a subscription to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ Montana Outdoors magazine and a T-shirt screened with their winning art work.
