Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is seeking public comment on a proposal to acquire approximately 78 acres of land along the Bitterroot River three miles south of Missoula.

The proposed acquistion of this acreage would connect and provide land access to three existing FWP properties, two of which are currently accessible only from the river.   The acquisition would increase total public access to 113 acres and 1.4 miles of river frontage.

The   property is currently owned by the Montana Natural History Center, and has historically been used by the public to access the river for a variety of recreational activities.   The purchase would ensure continued river access and preservation of the floodplain and wetland environment.

Currently the site provides walk-in river access only.    The closest   Fishing Access Site (FAS) is Chief Looking Glass, approximately six miles south of Lolo.

To view the Draft Environmental Assessment for David’s Place Acquisition, go to FWP’s website, fwp.mt.gov, and look under “Recent Public Notices” or request a copy by mailing FWP, 3201 Spurgin Road, Missoula, MT 59804; phoning (406) 542-5500 or emailing shrose@mt.gov.

Comments should be directed to Rory Zarling by mail at the address above or can be emailed to rzarling@mt.gov.   Comments must be received no later than 5 p.m., Nov. 11, 2008.
