BILLINGS — Pictograph Cave State Park closed for the season Thursday evening so construction can start on a new visitor center. The park, six miles southeast of Billings on Colburn Road, will reopen the evening of Oct. 31 for the Halloween “Are there really ghosts at Ghost Cave?” program. Otherwise it will be closed to the public. The park was originally scheduled to remain open through Oct. 31. But construction crews will start moving equipment to the site this week, so park managers decided to close it eight days early. Construction will start immediately on the $700,000 visitor center, which will house interpretive displays, a meeting room, restrooms and offices. Completion is scheduled for 2009. The Halloween program will run from 6 p.m. until after dark Friday, Oct. 31. The free, family program will include a guided interpretive tour of Pictograph, Middle and Ghost Caves – by starlight or flashlight – followed by warm apple cider and seasonal treats around a campfire in the park’s picnic area. People should dress for the weather and bring a flashlight and lawn chair. -FWP-
