This article was Archived on Friday, November 07, 2008

The Deer and Elk General Rifle Season began in Montana on Sunday, October 26, 2008. In southeastern Montana weather conditions were not good, steady high winds with gusts up to 40 mph kept wildlife movement to a minimum.

According to region 7 biologist, Howard Burt, “Weather conditions were very windy (30 – 40 mph) and cold. This may explain the lower than normal hunters numbers and success.” Glendive check station saw 73 hunters come through. Fifty-nine deer hunters’ harvested 21 deer for 36 % success, 11 upland bird hunters harvested at least one bird and 3 hunters harvested 2 antelope.   Deer hunters coming through the check station harvested 7 mule deer of which, 4 were bucks and 3 were does. White-tail deer harvest was 19 of which, 11 were bucks and 8 were does.

Hysham check station had 66 hunters pass through on opening day. Thirty-two antelope, 9 mule deer, 3 white-tail deer, 2 turkeys and 77 upland game birds were harvested. Overall hunter numbers were lower than past years.
