For those folks who kill a deer or elk this hunting season and decide to do the processing themselves, there is always the question of what to do with the carcass scraps.

Most do-it-yourselfers will dispose of the scraps properly, but some resort to dumping bones, hide and hooves by the side of the road or in a public spot, like a fishing access site.

"Don’t just dump wildlife carcass scraps," says Fish, Wildlife and Parks warden Capt. Mike Martin. "It’s littering, which means you can be fined and lose your privileges to hunt, fish and trap for a year."

Dumping carcass scraps can also attract unwanted scavengers like mountain lions or dogs that may get hit my passing traffic or lead to other problems with area residents.

"The best way to dispose of the scraps, whether it’s bones or hide is to break them down into manageable pieces, put them in a garbage bag and into a garbage can or dumpster," Martin says.

Anyone who witnesses illegal dumping of wildlife parts should note the time, date and place and, if possible, get a physical description of the people involved and any vehicles, especially a license number.

Then call 1-800-TIPMONT. All callers may remain anonymous and may receive a reward.
