Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is developing rosters of individuals who are interested in being considered for game damage deer and elk hunts later this year in some specific areas that may experience game damage problems. “The damage can be to everything from row crops to haystacks,” said Don Childress, FWP wildlife division administrator. “With the extremely dry conditions we’re having in some parts of the state, we may see more problems than usual.” In most areas, FWP uses lists of individuals who were unsuccessful in the special drawings for a deer or elk permit to build game-damage hunt rosters. FWP will create additional rosters for deer hunters in hunting districts 203, 281, 283, 285, and 292 and for elk hunters who agree to hunt with a shotgun in hunting district groups 339 and 343. Interested individuals should apply between August 1 and August 31 by accessing the FWP web page at fwp.state.mt.us at Hunting under Game Damage Hunts and providing their name, address, phone number and the hunting district number (s) they are applying for. Or hunters may call 1-900-225-5397 and provide the information. A $1.50 charge applies and callers must be at least 18 years old. Childress said individuals will be randomly selected and contacted only if there is an opportunity to participate in a game-damage hunt some time later this year.
