Bear managers advise electric fencing to protect orchards, trees, beehives, grains, gardens, berries bushes, pets, livestock and garbage. Bears are very motivated, so electric fencing must be done correctly, should produce a minimum of 5,000 volts and must be maintained. (Electric Fencing Suppliers)
Sprayed in the face of a charging bear is effective in repelling a bear. Please be certain that the bear pepper spray you use is intended for bears and is not a personal defense spray. Personal defense sprays contain ingredients that are not intended for use on bears. The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, a group of State and Federal agencies, recommends a formula with one to two percent capsaicin and related capsaicinoids sprayed at a distance of 25 feet or more for six seconds. The minimum size can the EPA will register is 7.9 ounces. Lesser amounts may not reach the distance or have the duration of spray to be effective.
Garbage should be stored in bear proof containers, or indoors in a secure shed or garage. Many sizes and styles of bear proof garbage containers are available on the Internet. For assistance in picking the one that is right for you, contact your regional FWP office and ask for a bear biologist. Bear resistant containers are featured on the Living With Wildlife Foundation.
